Axel Munthe (1857-1949) va n\u00e9ixer a Oskarshamn (Su\u00e8cia). Va estudiar a la Universitat d’Upsala i despr\u00e9s a Par\u00eds amb el psiquiatre Jean Martin Charcot. En 1880 a, els 23 anys, es va convertir en el metge en medicina m\u00e9s jove d’Europa. Va ser metge i psiquiatre, tot i que la fama internacional li va arribar amb el llibre autobiogr\u00e0fic La hist\u00f2ria de San Michele<\/em>. Aquest llibre va ajudar a Munthe a sortir de la depressi\u00f3 causada per la p\u00e8rdua total de la visi\u00f3 als 52 anys. El 1934 va recuperar la vista despr\u00e9s d’una operaci\u00f3. Munthe va ser un filantrop, i en moltes ocasions va tractar m\u00e8dicament a gents sense recursos. A la Primera Guerra Mundial va servir com a metge de la Creu Roja al front franc\u00e8s. Tamb\u00e9 destaca la seva faceta com a incansable defensor dels drets dels animals, arribant a comprar els drets de la muntanya Barbarossa, a Capri, per crear un santuari per a les aus migrat\u00f2ries.
